The Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve is the beautiful southern coastline of Portugal. We had the pleasure of visiting at the beginning of September, 2017.  From Faro airport to where we booked the hotel in Lagos was more than a 1 hour drive. I highly suggest you rent a car since I cant see any other way of getting around the island. However, we had the car already booked from Expedia and we encountered some issues at pick up. Long story short, my advice is to book a car directly with the company.

The hotel was steps away from one of the area’s most beautiful beaches  and just a short walk to Lagos’ historic Old Town.  Basically located on a hillside overlooking the Atlantic Ocean near the southern Portuguese town of Lagos. The weather was fabulous. I was a bit worried thinking that in the month of September temperatures will drop, however, I was wrong.

Beaches we visted:

  • Praia da Marinha looks like something out of a photograph. Eight kilometres east of Lagoa, the Praia da Marinha is often voted as one of the best beaches in Europe. Bring your own umbrellas as there isn’t much shade and it gets very hot in the sun.
  •  The Dona Ana beach was within walking distance from our hotel. Great for strolling along the beach, exploring caves and sunbathing.  The color of the cliffs is so orange-ish what makes the landscape very colorful and live. There are beach beds and umbrellas to rent. Sunset here is unbelievable.
  • Praia do Camilo is also located near Lagos and it was close distance to our hotel. Golden sand and crystal clear water. There are cliffs all around, the beach is reached via a stairway involving some 200 steps. It is quite small and it gets crowded fairly quickly so I suggest to arrive in the morning.

Have you been to Portugal? And if so, I would love to hear all about your experience in the comments below.

Happy travelling!
